Miles for Midwives 2009:
Our second annual Miles for Midwives Fun Run/Walk was held October 11, 2009 at Alki Beach in Seattle WA. More than 65 nurse-midwives and supporters of midwifery participated and raised over $1500 to support the work of the chapter in increasing public awareness of midwifery services. ACNM Annual Meeting in Seattle!
In May 2009, Seattle hosted the ACNM Annual Meeting. The energy at our local booth was contagious. Many thanks to all the midwives who volunteered and extended such wonderful hospitality to all! The booth featured baskets donated from midwifery practices from all over Washington State. We raised over $6000 for the chapter! –but more important—we made an impression! Participants raved about the local speakers, our bus ads and the entertainment during convention---all of which our task force helped to happen. Within ACNM, Seattle will be remembered for years to come!

Continuing Education:
The University of Washington Continuing Nursing Education offers several conferences throughout the year inaddition to online courses. The Midwifery Update is a full day conference occurring annually in February. The Advanced Practice in Primary and Acute Care Conference is a 3 day conference annually in the fall.
The ACNM Annual Meeting is usually held in the final week of May. Information about obtaining ACNM CEUs is available here.
Information about certificate maintenance for CNMs can be found at the ACNM website. In addition, there is an explanation about the distinctions between the certificate maintenance program (CMP) and the continuing competency assessment (CCA). All nurse-midwives certified after 1995 are required to participate in the CMP. The American Midwifery Certification Board issues the national exam and re-certifications.
American College of Nurse-Midwives 54th Annual Meeting & Exposition in Seattle, May 21-27, 2009. All Washington state nurse-midwives are encouraged to get involved in planning to host the annual meeting. Planning meetings are held monthly and open to all, contact Shauna Applin for details or see the “members only” portion of the website for more information.

CNM Licensure in Washington:
The Washington State Department of Health has information regarding licensure for nurse-midwives. All certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) in Washington are licensed as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) and can obtain prescriptive authority for all legend and schedule II-IV drugs.
ARNP license renewal in the state of Washington requires 30 hours of continuing education every two years and an additional 15 hours in pharmacology for prescriptive authority. Detailed instructions on how to obtain prescriptive authority in Washington are available on the ARNPs United of Washington State website.
